Fairfield Harbour Yacht Club 2017 Commissioning Day

A crisp spring morning welcomed the 2017 Commissioning Day on Saturday, April 8. This highly anticipated event represents the official start of the boating and racing season for Fairfield Harbour Yacht Club (FHYC) members.

All 26 boats that participated in the boats parade gathered near Marker #2, on the Neuse River at Upper Broad Creek at 0930 hours. At 0945 hours Director Bill Flynn, aboard Dodona, provided formation instructions over Channel 69 and lead the parade, followed by the Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Secretary, Treasurer, Fleet Chaplain, Fleet Surgeon, Directors, and Past Commodores. The rest of the fleet fell in behind the lead boats maintaining a speed of approximately 4 knots.

The parade proceeded up Spring Creek and into the Inner Harbour for the Blessing of the Fleet. After the parade, boats returned to their slips/docks. Crews reconvened at the Shoreline docks where the Commissioning Day Ceremony commenced at 1130 hours at the flag pole. The American flag was raised in recognition of FHYC officers, directors as well as past and current commodores. An 18” cannon was fired and a wreath was placing in the water to honor deceased members of FHYC. A celebratory lunch followed at the Community Center.
