New Bern's 300 years of history

When a city reaches the ripe ole age of 300, historic markers line the streets and culture abounds. There’s much to learn about this lazy coastal town, so let’s get started.

Birthplace of Pepsi

Caleb Davis Bradham was born in Chinquapin, North Carolina, on May 27, 1867. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Bradham attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine in hopes of becoming a doctor. While attending school, he worked part-time as a pharmacy apprentice at a local drug store.

Historic District

New Bern is scattered with historic districts, including downtown, Riverside, and Ghent. Many of the homes from these districts were built around the turn of the century through World War II, and many of the Victorian mansions, Georgian and bungalow homes, Federal-style buildings, Greek revival homes, and more have been restored to their original splendor. These beautiful districts are not to be missed.
